Link Reclamation

Link reclamation is the process of finding and recovering lost or broken backlinks that once pointed to your website, restoring their SEO value by fixing or redirecting the target URLs.

What Is Link Reclamation?

Link reclamation is a proactive SEO strategy that involves identifying backlinks that have been lost, broken, or are pointing to incorrect URLs on your website, and then taking steps to restore them. Links can break for many reasons: pages get deleted or moved during a site migration, URLs change without proper redirects, or linking sites update their content and accidentally remove your link.

Unlike building new links from scratch, link reclamation recovers value you have already earned. These are links that real websites chose to give you based on the merit of your content, making them especially valuable in Google's eyes. The process typically involves auditing your backlink profile for lost links, identifying the cause, and either fixing the issue on your end or reaching out to the linking site.

Why Link Reclamation Matters for SEO

Every lost backlink represents a reduction in the link equity flowing to your site, which can gradually erode your search rankings over time. High-authority links are especially costly to lose, as they may have taken significant effort to earn in the first place. Regular link reclamation ensures you maintain the full value of your link profile without constantly needing to build new links to compensate.

Link reclamation is also one of the most efficient link building tactics available. Since the linking site has already demonstrated willingness to link to you, recovery rates are typically much higher than cold outreach success rates. Many reclamation opportunities can be fixed entirely on your end through 301 redirects, requiring no outreach at all.

How to Reclaim Lost Backlinks

Begin by using tools like Ahrefs or Semrush to identify recently lost backlinks and broken links pointing to your domain. Sort these by the authority of the linking domain to prioritize the most valuable recovery opportunities first. For links pointing to pages that have moved, implement 301 redirects from the old URL to the new one to immediately restore link equity.

For links that were removed by the linking site, reach out with a polite email explaining the situation and suggesting the link be restored or updated. Include the specific URL where the link existed and provide the correct destination URL. If your content has been updated or improved since the link was originally placed, mention this as added incentive for the webmaster to reinstate the link.
