Session Duration

Session duration is the total time a user spends on your website during a single visit, measured from the first page view to the last recorded interaction.

What Is Session Duration?

Session duration (average session duration) measures how long users spend on your website per visit. It is calculated from the first pageview timestamp to the last interaction timestamp. In GA4, "average engagement time" replaces this metric and only counts time when the page is in the foreground and the user is actively engaged.

Why Session Duration Matters

Session duration is a proxy for content engagement and value. Longer sessions generally indicate that users find your content useful and explore multiple pages. However, like bounce rate, context matters — a utility page (converter, calculator) may have short but highly valuable sessions.

How to Improve Session Duration

Create comprehensive, valuable content that encourages deeper exploration. Add internal links to related content. Improve page load speed (slow pages drive users away). Use clear navigation and content recommendations. Create content series and topic clusters that naturally lead to multi-page sessions.
